RRB JE/SSE Exam Pattern

The recruitment process for the RRB JE/SSE posts notified by the Railway Recruitment Board in their Centralized Employment Notice (CEN) is based on Single Stage Examination followed by verification of original documents.

The RRB JE/SSE Selection Process is made strictly based on the merit in the ONLINE (Computer Based) examination.

RRB JE/SSE Exam Pattern

The standard of questions for the Online (Computer Based) Examination usually conforms with the educational standards and/or minimum technical qualifications that is mentioned for the posts.

The questions in the exam is objective multiple choice type. The question paper is set in English, Hindi, Urdu and local languages as indicated in the centralized Employment Notice (CEN)

Below given is the RRB JE/SSE ONLINE (Computer Based) Examination Pattern

  • Duration: 120 minutes.
  • The questions are objective type with multiple choices and questionsasked are generally on topics/subjects like General awareness, Arithmetic, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Science and Technical Ability.
  • The Question paper has 150 questions, out of which 90 questions will be of Technical Ability & General Science and 60 questions from General awareness, Arithmetic, General Intelligence and Reasoning.


The technical part of 90 questions shall cover basic concepts of Science and Engineering from all the branches/disciplines of educational qualifications, given for respective categories as mentioned in the below table.

There is a negative marking in the Online (Computer Based) examination and 1/3rd of the marks allotted to the question is deducted for every incorrect answer as a negative marking.


  • Visually Handicapped candidates or candidates with cerebral Palsy whose writing speed is affected can avail the SCRIBE assistance(The candidates have to arrange their own SCRIBES at their own cost) for writing answers on their behalf.
    • Person with Disabilities (PWD) candidates engaging the Scribe should inform the RRB in prior.
    • A separate admit card/e-admit card will be issued to SCRIBES.
    • Candidate will be held responsible for any misconduct of the SCRIBE.
  • Candidates are not allowed to use calculators and any other electronic gadgets inside the examination hall. If any candidate is found with mobile phone or any other banned electronic item, then his/her candidature shall be cancelled immediately and he/she will be debarred from RRB examinations.

Candidates are shortlisted based on the performance of candidates in the ONLINE examination (wherever applicable) and candidates equal to the number of vacancies are called for Document Verification (DV)in the main list. Additionally, the number candidates equal to 30% of the vacancies to be filled are also called as backup and they are considered for empanelment only if there is shortage in empanelment from the main list.

Appointment of shortlisted candidates is based on fulfilling the Medical Fitness Test which is conducted by the Railway Administration, final verification of educational and community certificates, and background verification of the candidate’s character.

RRB JE/SSE Exam Medical Fitness Test Pattern

Candidates recommended for appointment should fulfill the required medical fitness standards and the test is conducted by the Railway Administration to ensure that the candidates are medically fit to carry out the duties relatedto the post.

Visual Acuity Standard is one of the crucial criteria of medical fitness of railway staff. Candidate should be physically fit in all respects and the medical requirements for different medical standards for different categories are outlined below:

  1. Visual Standards for A-3 Level
    Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/9 with or without glasses (Power of lenses not to exceed 2D).
    Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses and must pass test for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision & Night Vision.
  2. Visual Standards for B-1 Level
    Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power of lenses not to exceed 4D).
    Near Vision: Sn.0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required and must pass test for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Field of Vision & Night Vision.
  3. Visual Standards for B-2 Level
    Distance Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (power not to exceed 4D).
    Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required and must pass test for Field of Vision.
  4. Visual Standards for C-1 Level
    Distance Vision: 6/12, 6/18 with or without glasses.
    Near Vision: Sn: 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses when reading or close work is required.
  5. Visual Standards for C-2 Level
    Distance Vision: 6/12, Nil with or without glasses.
    Near Vision: Sn: 0.6 combined with or without glasses when reading or close work is required.


  • Candidates before filling the online application form should ensure that they fulfill the Medical Fitness Standards as they have to indicate the same in the online application form for the post they opt for.
  • Candidates who qualify both in the online (computer based) examinations and medical examination(s) along with the document verification will be recommended for appointment. Candidates who fail in the Medical Test under any circumstances will not be considered for any alternative appointment though they have cleared the online exam.
  • The medical standards (mentioned above are not exhaustive and are indicative only which is applicable to all the candidates in general.
  • For Ex-Servicemen different standards apply.

*A-1, A-2, A-3, B-1, B-2, C-1 & C-2 = Various Levels of Medical Standards which the candidates will have to qualify before appointment in Railways.

Verification of Original Documents and Format of Certificates

  1. Matriculation/High School Examination Certificate or Equivalent certificate (Proof for Date of Birth and Matric Qualification)
  2. Diploma / Degree Certificate (As applicable)
  3. Caste Certificate for SC/ST
  4. Caste Certificate for OBC
  5. Income Certificate for Waiving Examination Fee
  6. Medical Certificate for Persons with Disabilities (PWD)
  7. NOC from serving employees/Ex-Servicemen.
  8. Minority declaration on Non-Judicial Stamp Paper.


  1. Candidates who had applied for eligible for age-relaxation must submit the requisite and relevant certificate in original from the authorized authorityat the time of Document Verification. The format of the certificate should be as mentioned in the CEN.If candidates fail to submit the certificate, then their claim for SC/ST/OBC/Ex-SM/PWD status will be rejected and their candidature/ applications will be considered under General/UR category.
  2. Certificates submitted to during the DV must be strictly in the format prescribed in the Centralized Employment Notice.Certificates obtained in any other format other than mentioned in the Centralised Employment Notice
    (CEN) will not be accepted.
  3. All Certificates should be either in English or in Hindi only. Certificates which are not in English / Hindi, in such case a self-attested translated version in Hindi /English should be produced wherever or whenever required.
  4. Candidates will not be given extra time if the requisite original certificates are not produced on the date of DV and the candidature of such candidates will be cancelled or rejected.
